So it is interesting that 89% of students in law schools in the USA responding to a Thomson Reuters survey reported that during Covid-19 they were taking classes entirely online.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nHowever, for me the most interesting results are in the graph below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preferences for permanent changes<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tonybates.ca\/2020\/12\/18\/online-learning-and-law-schools-during-the-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-73423 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Law-school-online-preferences-1024x644.png\" alt=\"Preferences for permanent changes with law schools\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Law-school-online-preferences-1024x644.png 1024w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Law-school-online-preferences-150x94.png 150w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Law-school-online-preferences-768x483.png 768w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Law-school-online-preferences-1536x965.png 1536w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Law-school-online-preferences.png 1680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong><em>It seems clear that at least some level of online instruction will continue in the future, and that online learning will become widespread for at least some types of classes.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Given that there was almost no online learning in law schools in the USA pre-Covid 19, this is a significant conclusion.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">I appreciate Tony writing about this topic. He&#8217;s correct in saying the ABA and the legal education field &#8212; along with the entire legal realm &#8212; was behind the 8 ball in terms of online learning (and I would add the use of emerging technologies in general). In fact, I&#8217;d say that the ABA was essentially <em>twenty years behind<\/em> in terms of getting on board the online learning train. It still has a ways to go&#8230;<strong>but the pressure is on the ABA to get with the times. <em>Our society requires that they do so.<\/em> The pace of change has been changing for a decade or more now. <\/strong>They can no longer walk on the race track and hope to not get in the way of a world that&#8217;s traveling at 180 mph.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2564 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/daniel-christian-thepacehaschanged1.jpg\" alt=\"The pace has changed significantly and quickly\" width=\"480\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/daniel-christian-thepacehaschanged1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/daniel-christian-thepacehaschanged1-150x110.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Make no mistake, if the ABA &#8212; and the legal field in general &#8212; continues at their previous pace, we all will pay the price.
