{"id":7327,"date":"2010-07-19T14:20:31","date_gmt":"2010-07-19T18:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=7327"},"modified":"2010-07-19T14:20:55","modified_gmt":"2010-07-19T18:20:55","slug":"colleges-and-the-common-core","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/07\/19\/colleges-and-the-common-core\/","title":{"rendered":"Colleges and the Common Core"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2010\/07\/19\/core\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Colleges and the Common Core<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; InsideHigherEd.com<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">MINNEAPOLIS &#8212; For years,  educators and policy makers have been talking about the need to better  align K-12 and higher education, so that students coming out of high  school have the skills and knowledge they need to do college-level work  (and, not unimportantly, to reduce the need for remediation once  students are in college).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The establishment of common core standards for high school graduates  is of course first and foremost a matter of concern for elementary and  secondary school officials, and the creation of the standards is barely  on the radar screen of many college administrators and professors. And  yet it is clear that the standards will be truly meaningful and useful  only if they are fully embraced by higher education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Only if  colleges align their own admissions and placement policies with the  common core standards (and agree to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ets.org\/k12\/commonassessments\" target=\"_blank\">the  common assessments<\/a> that are likely to be developed to gauge mastery  of the standards) will high school students and their schools know what  to shoot for, Lingenfelter and Wilhoit said.
