It&#8217;s not necessarily a new idea, but the seed got planted in me by a former colleague, Quin Schultze (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2018\/01\/19\/dc-students-perhaps-this-learning-strategy-will-help-you-as-you-learn-how-to-learn-as-well\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which I blogged about in January of 2018<\/a>).<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> I&#8217;m calling it, &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/documents\/DanielSChristian-MyLearningJournal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>My Learning Journal.<\/strong><\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8221; <strong>The purpose of this device is to promote your metacognition\u00a0 &#8212; helping you put things into your <em>own<\/em> words and helping you identify your knowledge gaps.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I realize that such a learning strategy\/tool could take some time to complete. But it could pay off &#8212; big time! Give it a try for a few weeks and see what you think.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>And, with a shout-out to Mr. James McGrath, the President of the WMU-Cooley Law School, the article listed below explains the benefits of taking the time for such reflection:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/ocw\/mod\/oucontent\/view.php?id=51386&amp;section=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Reflective learning \u2013 reflection as a strategic study technique<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from open.edu<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpts:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Rather than thinking of reflection as yet another task to be added to your \u2018to do\u2019 list or squeezed into a busy study schedule, view it as something to practice at any stage. The emphasis is on <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><i>being<\/i><\/span>\u00a0a reflective learner rather than\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><i>doing<\/i><\/span> reflective learning.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Developing a habit of reflective learning will help you to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"oucontent-bulleted\">\n<li><b>evaluate your own progress<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>monitor and manage your own performance<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>self-motivate<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>keep focus on your learning goals<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>think differently about how you can achieve your goals<\/b>\u00a0by evaluating your study techniques, learning strategies and whether these best fit your current needs, identifying your skills development needs or gaps in knowledge<\/li>\n<li><b>think about and overcome what may be blocking your learning<\/b>\u00a0by using a different approach, or setting more pragmatic (realistic\/achievable) goals<\/li>\n<li><b>support and enrich your professional practice<\/b>\u00a0ensuring that you are better placed to respond to and manage new, unexpected and complex situations \u2013 a key requirement at Master\u2019s level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><br \/>\nPastors, trainers, K-12 educators, student teachers, coaches, musical teachers, and others: Perhaps a slightly modified version of this tool might be beneficial to those with whom you work as well&#8230;?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And for educators and trainers, perhaps we should use such a tool to think about <em>our own<\/em> teaching and training methods &#8212; and what we are (or aren&#8217;t) learning ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>Addendum on 5\/14\/20:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Perhaps someone will build a bot for this type of thing, which prompts us to reflect upon these things.<\/strong><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producthunt.com\/alternatives\/remind-bot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here are some examples of what I&#8217;m talking about<\/a> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">or something like Woebot, which Jeremy Caplan mentioned<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/wondertools.substack.com\/p\/wonder-tools-my-digital-sanity-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From DSC: Here&#8217;s an idea that I&#8217;ve been thinking about for quite some time now.
