The essential and unavoidable\u00a0risks<\/a>\u00a0of deploying these tools are becoming apparent. A majority of Americans have functionally been put in a\u00a0perpetual police lineup<\/a>\u00a0simply for getting a driver\u2019s license: Their D.M.V. images are\u00a0turned into faceprints<\/a>\u00a0for government tracking with few limits. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials\u00a0are using<\/a>\u00a0facial recognition technology to scan state driver\u2019s license databases without citizens\u2019 knowing. Detroit aspires to use facial recognition for round-the-clock\u00a0monitoring<\/a>. Americans are losing\u00a0due-process protections<\/a>, and even law-abiding citizens cannot confidently engage in\u00a0free association, free movement and free speech<\/a>\u00a0without fear of being\u00a0tracked.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cNotice and choice<\/a>\u201d has been an abysmal failure. Social media companies, airlines and retailers overhype the short-term benefits of facial recognition while using unreadable\u00a0privacy policies<\/span>\"Close<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and vague disclaimers that make it hard to understand how the technology endangers users\u2019\u00a0privacy and freedom<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
