They rarely have a chance to choose their learning path in school, and routinely treat school like a \u201cjob\u201d instead of the most valuable learning experience they will ever have\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">By the time students get to high school, over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/stressed-out-teens-with-school-a-main-cause\/2014\/02\/14\/d3b8ab56-9425-11e3-84e1-27626c5ef5fb_story.html?utm_term=.14b8ff4a4cec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">83% are stressed out<\/a>, [and] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/1308-students-bored-school.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">67% say they are bored half the time<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>and many learn to \u201cplay the game of school\u201d<\/strong> <\/span>worrying about what will happen to them if they do not get a particular grade and get into a specific college.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What we end up with are students who are never given a chance to explore their own interests in school, who end up confused about what they want to do with their future because <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>they continue to march down a path that has been chosen for them for 12 years.<\/strong> <\/span>Many of these students end up getting jobs in fields they think are \u201csafe\u201d or \u201cpractical\u201d but don\u2019t have a personal connection or interest to the work they are doing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Choice in what content our students consume, what activities they take on in and out of school, what assessments they take, and choice in their purpose for learning.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Choice drives student ownership of their learning, which kicks engagement into high-gear, and ultimately leads to learning that is intrinsic and powerful and deep.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Our son has become a game-player. He knows just what he needs to get that A. No more, nor less. He doesn&#8217;t care about learning. <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And he is tired of getting information crammed down his throat. Information he doesn&#8217;t care about&#8230;at all. Since 10th grade, he has become disengaged. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Next year (for his senior year of H.S.), he is heading to studying what he <em>wants to study<\/em> &#8212; acting. Although it will be very difficult, I think he will blossom.
