The figure has now risen to <strong>40,000 barrels of oil a day <\/strong>that is spewing into the the Gulf of Mexico.<strong> Not only is this an enormous <em>waste<\/em>, but the<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">environmental and  economic <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>costs <\/em>are also enormous<\/span>!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6192\" title=\"oil-spill-day-53\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/oil-spill-day-53.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Oil spill -- day 53!\" width=\"303\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/oil-spill-day-53.jpg 303w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/oil-spill-day-53-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"style1\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And thoughts about loss and costs ran through my mind&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Then, later today, I saw this article and those thoughts returned to my mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigpicture.org\/2010\/06\/urban-schools-are-broken-not-the-kids-founder-of-university-prep-schools-says\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Urban Schools Are Broken, Not the Kids, Founder of University Prep  Schools Says<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from Crain&#8217;s Detroit Business by Tom Henderson <em>(from 6\/3\/10 with <span style=\"color: #800000;\">emphasis below from DSC<\/span>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe can\u2019t attain our goal of being a top 10 state if we continue to  be a 34th state in student achievement,\u201d said Nolan Finley, editorial  page editor of The Detroit News, to begin a morning panel Thursday on  innovative education reform at the Mackinac Policy Conference. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<strong>We can\u2019t  continue to allow one of five students to drop out, three of five  students in urban areas.<\/strong><\/span>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u201cIf you keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, maybe you  don\u2019t understand the damn problem,\u201d<\/strong> said Michael Flanagan, state  superintendent of public instruction for the state of Michigan. \u201cMany of  us in the K-12 community are in denial. But <span style=\"color: #000000;\">the fact is, economic  development is education, and education is economic development.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And I reflected upon the figure of 30%, which stuck in my mind as the drop out rate that the US is up to for many cities (don&#8217;t quote me on this).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The point is&#8230;what a waste! When a student drops out, society is hurt.<\/strong> It&#8217;s costly to lose that person&#8217;s skills, thoughts, ideas, talents, gifts, abilities. And it can be costly to clean up after these losses, as the bulging prisons confirm. We are all in this boat together.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Every day, <a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/class-struggle\/2010\/06\/must-read_new_report_on_high_s.html\" target=\"_blank\">a much greater &#8220;spill&#8221; is occurring in our nation<\/a> &#8212; with enormous costs for the societies of the world &#8212; yet we don&#8217;t seem to have the urgency that we should have.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From DSC: As I was working out today, I noticed that the United States is on Day 53 of the oil spill!!!
