The Lord<\/span> Speaks<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

38\u00a0<\/span>Then the Lord<\/span> spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWho is this that obscures my plans<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>with words without knowledge?<\/span><\/span>
\n3\u00a0<\/sup>Brace yourself like a man;<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I will question you,<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and you shall answer me.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhere were you when I laid the earth\u2019s foundation?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Tell me, if you understand.<\/span><\/span>
\n5\u00a0<\/sup>Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Who stretched a measuring line across it?<\/span><\/span>
\n6\u00a0<\/sup>On what were its footings set,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or who laid its cornerstone\u2014<\/span><\/span>
\n7\u00a0<\/sup>while the morning stars sang together<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and all the angels[a<\/a>]<\/sup> shouted for joy?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWho shut up the sea behind doors<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>when it burst forth from the womb,<\/span><\/span>
\n9\u00a0<\/sup>when I made the clouds its garment<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and wrapped it in thick darkness,<\/span><\/span>
\n10\u00a0<\/sup>when I fixed limits for it<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and set its doors and bars in place,<\/span><\/span>
\n11\u00a0<\/sup>when I said, \u2018This far you may come and no farther;<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>here is where your proud waves halt\u2019?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHave you ever given orders to the morning,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or shown the dawn its place,<\/span><\/span>
\n13\u00a0<\/sup>that it might take the earth by the edges<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and shake the wicked out of it?<\/span><\/span>
\n14\u00a0<\/sup>The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>its features stand out like those of a garment.<\/span><\/span>
\n15\u00a0<\/sup>The wicked are denied their light,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and their upraised arm is broken.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHave you journeyed to the springs of the sea<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or walked in the recesses of the deep?<\/span><\/span>
\n17\u00a0<\/sup>Have the gates of death been shown to you?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?<\/span><\/span>
\n18\u00a0<\/sup>Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Tell me, if you know all this.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhat is the way to the abode of light?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And where does darkness reside?<\/span><\/span>
\n20\u00a0<\/sup>Can you take them to their places?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Do you know the paths to their dwellings?<\/span><\/span>
\n21\u00a0<\/sup>Surely you know, for you were already born!<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>You have lived so many years!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHave you entered the storehouses of the snow<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or seen the storehouses of the hail,<\/span><\/span>
\n23\u00a0<\/sup>which I reserve for times of trouble,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>for days of war and battle?<\/span><\/span>
\n24\u00a0<\/sup>What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?<\/span><\/span>
\n25\u00a0<\/sup>Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and a path for the thunderstorm,<\/span><\/span>
\n26\u00a0<\/sup>to water a land where no one lives,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>an uninhabited desert,<\/span><\/span>
\n27\u00a0<\/sup>to satisfy a desolate wasteland<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and make it sprout with grass?<\/span><\/span>
\n28\u00a0<\/sup>Does the rain have a father?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Who fathers the drops of dew?<\/span><\/span>
\n29\u00a0<\/sup>From whose womb comes the ice?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens<\/span><\/span>
\n30\u00a0<\/sup>when the waters become hard as stone,<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>when the surface of the deep is frozen?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

31\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cCan you bind the chains[b<\/a>]<\/sup> of the Pleiades?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Can you loosen Orion\u2019s belt?<\/span><\/span>
\n32\u00a0<\/sup>Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons[c<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or lead out the Bear[d<\/a>]<\/sup> with its cubs?<\/span><\/span>
\n33\u00a0<\/sup>Do you know the laws of the heavens?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Can you set up God\u2019s[e<\/a>]<\/sup> dominion over the earth?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

34\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cCan you raise your voice to the clouds<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and cover yourself with a flood of water?<\/span><\/span>
\n35\u00a0<\/sup>Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Do they report to you, \u2018Here we are\u2019?<\/span><\/span>
\n36\u00a0<\/sup>Who gives the ibis wisdom[f<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or gives the rooster understanding?[g<\/a>]<\/sup><\/span><\/span>
\n37\u00a0<\/sup>Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens<\/span><\/span>
\n38\u00a0<\/sup>when the dust becomes hard<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and the clods of earth stick together?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

39\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cDo you hunt the prey for the lioness<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and satisfy the hunger of the lions<\/span><\/span>
\n40\u00a0<\/sup>when they crouch in their dens<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>or lie in wait in a thicket?<\/span><\/span>
\n41\u00a0<\/sup>Who provides food for the raven<\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>when its young cry out to God<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>and wander about for lack of food?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
