Just 20 new courses are chosen by a faculty review committee annually, all of them ultimately offered to learners in at least one free version\u2014part of Harvard\u2019s commitment to improve access to education globally through HarvardX (HX), the University\u2019s online course initiative. Hern\u00e1n\u2019s course is based on Epidemiology (EPI) 289: \u201cModels for Causal Inference,\u201d the core offering he\u2019s taught for 14 years at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health (HSPH). <em>Harvard Magazine<\/em> accompanied Hern\u00e1n during the making of his MOOC to find out what it takes to produce one, and how that compares to creating a traditional course.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nFaculty members typically spend 96 to 142 hours helping produce and run an eight-week MOOC, according to HarvardX estimates. &#8230;But when complete, it will free him from much of the time and expense of traveling to teach this fundamental introductory material.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nIt takes a team of skilled professionals\u2014HX employs a staff of about 45, including managers, videographers, graphic designers, digital editors, and even a copyright attorney and an accessibility coordinator (who helps make the materials usable for sight- and hearing-impaired learners)\u2014to make each MOOC, at a cost that ranges widely, depending on the nature of the course and the sites of location shoots. This one cost about $100,000 to make.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nAmong the University\u2019s goals in supporting the production of courses like Hern\u00e1n\u2019s is maximizing their \u201creach\u201d as part of \u201cHarvard\u2019s contribution to a rising tide of education globally,\u201d says HX faculty director Robert Lue.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nA video lecture therefore becomes a short unit in which to make one point, \u201cnot five. Because if I try to make five points, I need 50 minutes.\u201d The hooks\u2014the real-world applications\u2014mean that \u201cI start each lesson by telling students why this is important, why they should keep watching\u2026.You are in a competition for attention&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cFor example, it seems obvious, but there\u2019s only one Miguel Hern\u00e1n.
