{"id":59170,"date":"2017-04-13T11:52:10","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T15:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=59170"},"modified":"2017-04-17T08:23:46","modified_gmt":"2017-04-17T12:23:46","slug":"what-are-the-ramifications-for-higher-education-re-the-massive-changes-beginning-to-take-place-due-to-ai-automation-robotics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2017\/04\/13\/what-are-the-ramifications-for-higher-education-re-the-massive-changes-beginning-to-take-place-due-to-ai-automation-robotics\/","title":{"rendered":"What are the ramifications for higher education re: the *massive* changes beginning to take place due to AI, automation, &#038; robotics?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">The recent pieces below made me once again reflect on the <strong><em>massive changes that are quickly approaching &#8212; and in some cases are already here &#8212; <\/em><\/strong>for a variety of nations throughout the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">They caused me to reflect on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <strong>What the potential ramifications for higher education might be regarding these changes that are just starting to take place in the workplace due to artificial intelligence<\/strong> (i.e., the increasing use of algorithms, machine learning, and deep learning, etc.),<strong> automation, &amp; robotics?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>The need for people to reinvent themselves quickly<\/strong> throughout their careers (if we can still call them careers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How should we, as a nation, prepare for these massive changes <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">so that there isn&#8217;t civil unrest due to soaring inequality and unemployment?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">As found in the April 9th, 2017 edition of our local newspaper here:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59171\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/AreYouIndispensible-GR-Press-4-9-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/AreYouIndispensible-GR-Press-4-9-2017.jpg 618w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/AreYouIndispensible-GR-Press-4-9-2017-150x109.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title margin-bottom-30\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">When even our local newspaper is picking up on this trend, you know it is real and has some significance to it.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Then, as I was listening to the radio a day or two after seeing the above article, I heard of another related piece on NPR.\u00a0 <strong>NP<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>R is having a journalist travel across the country, trying to identify &#8220;robot-safe&#8221; jobs.\u00a0<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/features.marketplace.org\/robotproof\/\" target=\"_blank\">Here&#8217;s the feature on this from MarketPlace.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/features.marketplace.org\/robotproof\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59173 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/RobotProofJobs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/RobotProofJobs.jpg 690w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/RobotProofJobs-150x107.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What changes do institutions of traditional higher education<br \/>\n<em>immediately<\/em> need to begin planning for? Initiating?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>What changes should be planned for and begin to be initiated<br \/>\nin the way(s) that we accredit new programs?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Keywords\/ideas that come to my mind:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Change &#8212; to society, to people, to higher ed, to the workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pace of technological change &#8212; no longer linear, but exponential<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Career development <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Staying relevant &#8212; as institutions, as individuals in the workplace<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Reinventing ourselves over time &#8212; and having to do so quickly<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Adapting, being nimble, willing to innovate &#8212; as institutions, as individuals<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Game-changing environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Lifelong learning &#8212; higher ed needs to put more emphasis on microlearning, heutagogy, and delivering constant\/up-to-date streams of content and learning experiences. This could happen via the addition\/use of smaller learning hubs, some even makeshift learning hubs that are taking place at locations that these institutions don&#8217;t even own&#8230;like your local Starbucks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">If we don&#8217;t get this right, there could be major civil unrest as inequality and unemployment soar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Traditional institutions of higher education have not been nearly as responsive to change as they have needed to be; this opens the door to alternatives.
