I know I need the LORD&#8217;s help here for sure; but I&#8217;m trying to watch <em>what<\/em> I&#8217;m thinking about.\u00a0 The college where I am an adjunct faculty member, Calvin College, seeks to impact the <em>hearts and minds<\/em> of our students. The mind involves what we think <em>about<\/em>. As such, the Apostle Paul gives us some solid advice here.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">There is power in ideas &#8212; for good, or for ill.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Philippians 4:8 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northwestern.edu\/studentaffairs\/student-engagement\/traditions\/university-motto\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my alma mater&#8217;s motto (i.e., Northwestern University)<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; \u00a0though I&#8217;m sorry to say that Northwestern has drifted far from its original roots and its original worldviews. The current emphasis at NU is to think about oneself &#8212; <em>look out for #1<\/em> has become their new motto throughout the last few decades. That type of motto asks:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How much money will you be able to make? What will your salary be?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How many people report will be\u00a0reporting to you?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Where will your office be?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">What kind of car will you be\u00a0driving? What # in the series will\u00a0it be?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In which area of the city or suburbs will you be able to live?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">(By the way, I&#8217;m still trying to <em>unlearn<\/em> that type of perspective and move more towards a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1peter4:10&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Peter 4:10 perspective<\/a>: Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God\u2019s grace in its various forms.)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philippians 4:8 New International Version (NIV) Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable\u2014if anything is excellent or praiseworthy\u2014think about such things. &nbsp; From DSC: Three brief reflections here: What we think about is important.
