[Christian]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> It wasn&#8217;t too long ago that the price of gasoline in our area was hovering around $4.00 per gallon.\u00a0 As gas prices kept increasing through the years, people began to cut back on the amount that they traveled &#8212; this included our own family as well, as we started seriously questioning whether we needed to make trip A, B, or C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I remember questioning why the prices kept going up.\u00a0 I began to be suspicious of the large, <span class=\"st\">international oil and gas companies &#8212; sensing some opportunistic greed originating from them&#8230;and <\/span>wondering if this greed wasn&#8217;t being shared by many firms\/traders on Wall Street.\u00a0 I remember thinking to myself,<em> &#8220;Enjoy the profits now folks&#8230;because you are likely shooting yourselves in the foot.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Now, fast forward a bit and I began to see more hybrid cars &#8212; cars that &#8220;have a traditional internal-combustion engine and a fuel tank, as well as one or more electric motors and a battery pack.&#8221; <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edmunds.com\/fuel-economy\/what-is-a-hybrid-car-how-do-hybrids-work.html\" target=\"_blank\">*\u00a0 <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This observation seems to be backed up by data:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hybrid_electric_vehicles_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/c3\/US_HEV_market_share_1999_2014.png\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Then I saw more purely electric cars. Again, this seems to be backed up by data:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2015\/03\/28\/ev-demand-growing-global-market-hits-740000-units\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/c1cleantechnicacom.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/files\/2015\/03\/electric-cars-worldwide-total.png\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Demand for their products decreased.\u00a0 This was likely due to their high prices and due to people seeking other alternatives<\/strong> (perhaps there were other reasons as well).\u00a0 The revenues and profits did go down for some of the large, <span class=\"st\">international oil and gas companies, such as <\/span>ExxonMobil. The graphic below illustrates a major drop in both revenues and in net profits for ExxonMobil (i.e., showing an amount of net profit in 2015 that was <em>less than 1\/2<\/em> the net profit back in 2011):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/revenuesandprofits.com\/how-exxonmobil-makes-money\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/revenuesandprofits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ExxonMobil-Revenues-and-Net-Profit-2011-to-2015.png\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">So, as I work within the higher education industry, I can&#8217;t help but ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Are we within the higher education industry making the same mistake?\u00a0 Are we not fighting hard enough to bring the prices down? Are we still ok with yearly tuition increases?\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">When the cost per credit hour continually goes up &#8212; like the price of a gallon of gasoline did there for a while &#8212; aren&#8217;t there going to be ramifications to that trend as well?\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Put another way, do we really think prices can increase indefinitely without serious ramifications?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I realize that most institutions of traditional higher education are different from large, international corporations &#8212; having different stakeholders, sources of funding, and dynamics\/forces impacting us. I realize that most people within higher education are here to help students, and likely the word <em>greed<\/em> is too strong of a word for many working within higher education.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But the question won&#8217;t leave my mind&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Are institutions of higher education shooting ourselves in the foot &#8212; just like the oil and gas companies did?<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In terms of obtaining credentials and applicable knowledge&#8230;people will find the equivalents of electric cars and hybrid cars &#8212; in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2015\/05\/29\/alternatives-to-traditional-higher-ed-continue-to-develop\/\" target=\"_blank\">we&#8217;re seeing such alternatives crop up all the time these days<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 People holding the steering wheels within higher education better start taking this much more seriously and had better start making some <em>serious adjustments<\/em> to the routes being taken &#8212; the current trajectory doesn&#8217;t look promising.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">No more can there be increases in tuition.\u00a0 Prices had better start coming down, or we truly will be shooting ourselves in the foot.
