Can it fundamentally change K-12 education?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The room, which more closely resembles a fabrication studio than middle school classroom, boasts tools like a drill press, torch, welder, laser cutter, forge, and 3D-printer. Books with titles like <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Fabrication: Essays on Making Things<\/em> <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">&amp; Making Meaning<\/em> and <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">The Geometry of Sheet Metal<\/em> <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Work<\/em> rest on a shelf. Safety goggles and a collection of posters around the room remind students to \u201crespect\u201d the tools and keep in mind \u201cwhat they can do <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">to<\/em> you if not used with thought and care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">East Bay School for Boys (EBSB) is one of many schools across the country?\u2014?and in the Bay Area in particular?\u2014?that sees great value in offering its students DIY (do-it-yourself) learning experiences, as opposed to traditional learning via rote memorization or teacher-led lesson plans. It\u2019s part of the \u201cmaker\u201d movement?\u2014?that is, the trend of encouraging people to build new devices from scratch?\u2014?which has exploded in recent years, from elementary school classrooms to Silicon Valley board rooms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In the education world, public, private, and charter schools alike are empowering kids to roll up their sleeves and jump on the experiential bandwagon.
