It is a set of skills and applied methodologies that can be learned\u2014in impressively diverse ways\u2014and it is a dynamic way of coming to understand the world that is practical and empowering. As Alvin Toffler wrote in 1974, \u201c<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A focus on the future is relevant to all learners, regardless of age.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">For this special report, we called for essays from futurists who have experienced futures education, be it in a K-12 class project, a professional certificate program, a workshop, or a full degree program. We received an overwhelming response from students, educators, and several people who have been on both sides of the learning and teaching experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We hope readers will continue to share their experiences with us\u2014and with tomorrow\u2019s futures learners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014THE EDITORS<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">I can&#8217;t stress enough the importance of helping students learn more about how to see what might be coming down the pike &#8212; to be able to pulse check a variety of environments.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">This is not &#8220;fluff&#8221;, gazing into a crystal ball, or pie-in-the-sky type of thinking.\u00a0 There are numerous techniques being used within futurism today*, with real and practical applications.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>For me, futures studies have strong ties in with developing strategy and vision as well as identifying opportunities and threats.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Students need access to many more of these *futures studies* programs!\u00a0 (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachthefuture.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">teachthefuture.org may be helpful here<\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\">).<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\">We can&#8217;t start building these programs out too soon. Enrollments should be strong once people understand how <em>helpful<\/em> and <em>practical<\/em> these skills and methodologies can be.\u00a0 In fact, <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">given the exponential pace we are currently experiencing, these skills become <em>critical<\/em> not only for corporations\/businesses and for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/ero\/article\/higher-education-2024-glimpsing-future\" target=\"_blank\">higher education<\/a>, but for <em>individuals<\/em> as well &#8212; especially seeing as more of us are becoming contingent workers<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> (freelancers, independent professionals, temporary contract workers, independent contractors or consultants).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">When we&#8217;re moving at 180 mph, we can&#8217;t be looking at the front of our hoods.\u00a0 We need to be scanning the horizons.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">* As Haven Allahar stated in the item<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfs.org\/futurist\/2014-issues-futurist\/september-october-2014-vol-48-no-5\/futures-education-teaching-and-le-0#5\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Futures Education in the Caribbean&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8230;the common techniques utilized in the practice of futuring:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Scanning.<\/li>\n<li>DEGEST (demography, economics, governance, environment, society, technology).<\/li>\n<li>Trend analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Scenarios.<\/li>\n<li>Delphi polling.<\/li>\n<li>Modeling.<\/li>\n<li>Simulation and games.<\/li>\n<li>Brainstorming.<\/li>\n<li>Visioning.<\/li>\n<li>Anticipating wild cards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\" \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47904\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DanielChristian-MonitoringTrends.jpg\" alt=\"DanielChristian-MonitoringTrends\" width=\"640\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DanielChristian-MonitoringTrends.jpg 640w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/DanielChristian-MonitoringTrends-150x121.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Introduction (emphasis DSC) Futures Studies as it has evolved since the early 1970s is both a discipline and a meta-discipline.
