{"id":47745,"date":"2014-11-04T18:10:19","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T23:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=47745"},"modified":"2014-11-04T18:17:06","modified_gmt":"2014-11-04T23:17:06","slug":"team-based-content-creationdelivery-is-pulling-ahead-of-the-pack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2014\/11\/04\/team-based-content-creationdelivery-is-pulling-ahead-of-the-pack\/","title":{"rendered":"Team-based content creation\/delivery is pulling ahead of the pack!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I attended the <em>20th Annual Online Learning Consortium International Conference.<\/em>\u00a0 While there, I was inspired by an excellent presentation entitled, <strong>&#8220;<span class=\"field-content\"><a href=\"http:\/\/olc.onlinelearningconsortium.org\/conference\/2014\/aln\/disruptive-innovation-msus-surviving-coming-zombie-apocalypse-are-you-ready-surv\" target=\"_blank\">A Disruptive Innovation: MSU&#8217;s Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse &#8211; Are You Ready to Survive a New Way of Learning?<\/a><\/span>&#8220;<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 The four team members from Michigan State University included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Glenn R. Stutzky | Course Instructor<\/li>\n<li>Keesa V. Muhammad | Instructional Designer<\/li>\n<li>Christopher Irvin | Instructional Designer<\/li>\n<li>Hailey Mooney | Course Librarian<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/zombie.msu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Check out the intro clip on the website about the course<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/zombie.msu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47746\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/MSUZombie-Oct2014.jpg\" alt=\"MSUZombie-Oct2014\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/MSUZombie-Oct2014.jpg 641w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/MSUZombie-Oct2014-150x129.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From the description for the presentation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>This session highlights MSU\u2019s award winning, groundbreaking online course that fuses social theory, filmmaking, social media, and viral marketing while students survive an apocalyptic event. <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/zombie.msu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>http:\/\/zombie.msu.edu\/<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>MSU created and used<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> powerful digital storytelling and multimedia to overlay real, experiential, immersive learning.<\/strong><\/span> Important content was relayed, but in a way that drew upon your emotions, your ability to solve problems and navigate in a world where you didn\u2019t have all of the information, your ability to work with others, and more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThis innovative course integrates current research and science on catastrophes and human behavior together with the idea of a zombie apocalypse. In doing so, <em>we actively engage<\/em> with students as they think about the nature, scope, and impact of catastrophic events on individuals, families, societies, civilizations, and the Earth itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cOur innovative approach to teaching and learning features: students as active participants, the instructor becomes the facilitator, storytelling replaces lectures, zombies become the catalyst of teaching, a \u201czombrarian\u201d (librarian) drives research, and the students emerge as digital storytellers as a way of assessing their own learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others outside MUS have found out about the course and have requested access to it. As a result of this,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/noncredit.msu.edu\/listSections.action?catalogid=15&amp;offeringid=983\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;ve opened it up to non-credit seeking participants<\/a> and now various people from police forces, Centers for Disease Control, and others are able to take the course.<\/strong> <strong><em>To make this learning experience even more accessible, the cost has been greatly reduced: from $1600+ to just $500. <\/em><\/strong><em>(So this talented team is not only offering powerful pedagogies, but also significant monetary contributions to the university\u00a0<\/em><em>as <\/em><em>well.)<\/em><strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>For me, the key thing here is that this course represents what I believe is the direction that\u2019s starting to really pull ahead of the pack and, if done well, will likely crush most of the other directions\/approaches.\u00a0 <\/strong>And that is the<strong> use of teams to create, deliver, teach, and assess content \u2013 i.e., <em>team-based<\/em> learning approaches. <\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So many of the sessions involved professional development for professors and teachers \u2013 and much of this is appropriate. However, in the majority of cases,<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong> individual efforts aren&#8217;t enough anymore.\u00a0 Few people can bring to the table what a talented, experienced group of specialists are able to bring.\u00a0 Individual efforts aren&#8217;t able to compete with team-based content creation and delivery anymore &#8212; and this is especially true online, whereby <em>multiple <\/em>disciplines are immediately invoked once content hits the digital realm.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this case, the team was composed of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The professor<\/li>\n<li>Two Instructional Designers<\/li>\n<li>and a librarian<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developed websites<\/li>\n<li>Designed their own logo<\/li>\n<li>Marketed the course w\/ a zombie walking around campus w\/ brochures and a walking billboard<\/li>\n<li>Used a Twitter stream<\/li>\n<li>Used a tool called <a href=\"http:\/\/penzu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pensu <\/a>for their students&#8217; individual journals<\/li>\n<li>Made extensive use of YouTube and digital storytelling<\/li>\n<li>Coined a new acronym called <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">MOLIE \u2013 multimedia online learning immersive experience<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Used game-like features, such as the development of a code that was found which revealed key information (which was optional, but was very helpful to those who figured it out).\u00a0 The team made it so that the course ended differently for each group, depending upon what the teams&#8217; decisions were through the weeks<\/li>\n<li>Used some 3D apps to make movies more realistic and to create new environments<\/li>\n<li>Continually presented new clues for students to investigate.\u00a0 Each team had a Team Leader that posted their team\u2019s decisions on YouTube.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They encouraged us to:<strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">THINK BIG!\u00a0 Get as creative as you can, and only pull back if the \u201csuits\u201d make you!\u00a0 Step outside the box!\u00a0 Take risks!\u00a0 &#8220;If an idea has life, water it. Others will check it out and get involved.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>In their case, the idea originated with an innovative, risk-taking professor willing to experiment<\/strong> <\/span>\u2013 and who started the presentation with the following soliloquy:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Syllabi are EVIL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Syllabi are EVIL and they must die!<br \/>\nListen to me closely and I\u2019ll tell you why.<br \/>\nJust want students to know what is known?<br \/>\nSee what\u2019s been seen?<br \/>\nGo \u2013 where we\u2019ve been going?<br \/>\nThen the Syllabus is your friend,<br \/>\ncuz you know exactly where you\u2019ll end.<br \/>\nBut if you want to go somewhere new,<br \/>\nsee colors beyond Red, Green, and Blue.<br \/>\nThen take out your Syllabus and tear-it-in-half,<br \/>\nnow uncertainty has become your path.<br \/>\nBe not afraid because you\u2019ll find,<br \/>\nthe most amazing things from Creative Minds,<br \/>\nwho have been set free to FLY,<br \/>\nonce untethered from the Syllabi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Glenn Stutzky<br \/>\nPremiered at the 2014<br \/>\nOnline Learning Consortium International Conference<br \/>\nOctober 29, 2014 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>&#8220;The number of infected in Michigan has reached critical mass.&#8221; CSM Quintero <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/sw290?src=hash\">#sw290<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/F6m8ZaoRyG\">pic.twitter.com\/F6m8ZaoRyG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MSU Zombie (@MSUZombies) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSUZombies\/status\/479595435435122688\">June 19, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They started with something that wasn\u2019t polished, but it\u2019s been an iterative approach over the semesters\u2026and they continue to build on it.<\/p>\n<p>I congratulated the team there &#8212; and do so again here.
