{"id":43955,"date":"2013-12-16T12:49:50","date_gmt":"2013-12-16T17:49:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=43955"},"modified":"2013-12-16T13:28:30","modified_gmt":"2013-12-16T18:28:30","slug":"reflections-on-is-it-too-late-to-reinvent-our-universities-maddock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2013\/12\/16\/reflections-on-is-it-too-late-to-reinvent-our-universities-maddock\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on &#8220;Is it too late to reinvent our universities?&#8221; [Maddock]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikemaddock\/2013\/12\/13\/is-it-too-late-to-reinvent-our-universities\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Is it too late to reinvent our universities? <\/strong><\/a>&#8212; from forbes.com by Mike Maddock<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt <span style=\"color: #800000;\">(most emphasis from DSC):<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A new survey by Moody\u2019s Investor Service reports that more than <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">40% of U.S. colleges and universities face stagnant <i>or falling <\/i>tuition revenue and enrollment.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">That\u2019s four in 10!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It isn\u2019t a misprint.<\/span> For you data heads, let me quote from the news release that accompanied the research report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moodys.com\/research\/Moodys-New-Survey-Finds-Over-40-of-Universities-Face-Falling--PR_287436\" target=\"_blank\">Moody\u2019s key findings include<\/a> net tuition revenue declines at a projected 28% of public and 19% of private universities, with net tuition revenue growth below inflation projected for 44% of public and 42% of private universities and total enrollment declines at nearly half of public and private universities. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In our prior survey, 15% of public and 18% of private universities projected net tuition revenue declines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Back in February of 2009, I publicly asked whether there was a bubble in higher education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.calvin.edu\/~dsc8\/walmartofeducation.htm\" target=\"_blank\">see 2\/16\/09 entry<\/a>) &#8212; being pretty sure there was one developing even before 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"See 2\/16\/09 entry here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.calvin.edu\/~dsc8\/walmartofeducation.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-43957\" alt=\"HigherEd-NextBubble-DanielChristian-Feb2009\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/HigherEd-NextBubble-DanielChristian-Feb2009.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/HigherEd-NextBubble-DanielChristian-Feb2009.jpg 300w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/HigherEd-NextBubble-DanielChristian-Feb2009-139x150.jpg 139w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A year or two later, there wasn&#8217;t any doubt in my mind that there was a bubble in higher ed.\u00a0 Then for me, the question became&#8230;&#8221;Has it popped yet?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Fast forward to 2013 and i<\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">t seems I have my answer.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a definite one; there&#8217;s no mistaking it.\u00a0 <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The bubble has popped.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For those of us working within higher education, time is no longer on our side. We have been too slow to adapt and not innovative enough with our experiments. If we keep this up, I can&#8217;t help but think that the answer to Maddock&#8217;s question is a &#8220;Yes.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">But we can change.
