{"id":43437,"date":"2013-11-11T11:57:54","date_gmt":"2013-11-11T16:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=43437"},"modified":"2013-11-13T08:46:28","modified_gmt":"2013-11-13T13:46:28","slug":"reflections-on-study-teachers-love-edtech-they-just-dont-use-it-lepi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2013\/11\/11\/reflections-on-study-teachers-love-edtech-they-just-dont-use-it-lepi\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on &#8220;Study: Teachers love EdTech, they just don\u2019t use it&#8221; [Lepi]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edudemic.com\/teachers-edtech-study\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Study: Teachers love EdTech, they just don\u2019t use it<\/strong> <\/a>&#8212; from edudemic.com by Katie Lepi<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>EdTech Is Essential!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>86% of teachers think it is \u2018important\u2019 or \u2018absolutely essential\u2019 to use edtech in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>965 say that edtech increases student engagement in learning<\/li>\n<li>95% say that it enables personalized learning<\/li>\n<li>89% say that it improves student outcomes<\/li>\n<li>87% say that it helps students collaborate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>However\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 19% use subject specific content tools weekly<\/li>\n<li>Only 31% use information or reference tools weekly<\/li>\n<li>Only 24% use teacher tools weekly<\/li>\n<li>Only 14% use digital curricula weekly<\/li>\n<li>Despite all the buzz about 1:1 classrooms, only about 1 in 9 are implementing a 1:1 or BYOD classroom<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><br \/>\nLooking at this solid posting from edudemic and Katie Lepi, I can&#8217;t help but ask:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>What might this tell us about the model\/approach that we are using?<\/strong> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Is that model\/approach working?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Is that model\/approach working fast enough to prepare our students for the futures they will inherit\/experience?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Are there other approaches that would work better?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">I&#8217;d like to add some potential factors to the list of why educational technologies might not be being implemented in certain situations:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">We decided not to use teams; that is, we decided that our teachers (or professors or trainers) should continue to do <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">everything &#8212; &#8220;it <em>is<\/em> their job after all&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A teacher (professor, trainer) <span style=\"color: #008000;\">may not be gifted in a particular area<\/span> (such as creating digital audio or digital video, designing simulations, developing educational gaming, designing e-books, offering mobile learning, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A teacher (professor, trainer) <span style=\"color: #008000;\">may not be interested in a particular area <\/span>(such as creating digital audio or digital video, designing simulations, developing educational gaming, designing e-books, offering mobile learning, etc.)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">May view an area as totally irrelevant<\/span> because that wasn&#8217;t part of that person&#8217;s background\/experience (i.e. Who needs educational gaming? Why should that matter\/help? I didn&#8217;t have that in my toolbox.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>With the rapid pace of change, time is no longer on our side.<\/strong>\u00a0 That is, it doesn&#8217;t serve our students well if it takes us 2-3 generations to get teachers, professors, and trainers ready to use all of the relevant technologies.\u00a0 That is a pipe dream and we need to abandon it asap.\u00a0 <strong>No one has all of the gifts that they need. We need to work with teams of specialists.\u00a0 It will take <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em>team-based efforts<\/em><\/span> to create and deliver learning environments, products, and services that feature more choice and more control for our students.\u00a0 <\/strong>They &#8212; and all of us actually &#8212; are encountering a different world every single day that we wake up.
