{"id":40981,"date":"2013-07-02T10:40:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-02T14:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=40981"},"modified":"2013-07-02T11:04:46","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T15:04:46","slug":"what-heutagogy-is-and-why-its-relevant-to-all-of-us-at-each-stage-of-our-lives-christian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2013\/07\/02\/what-heutagogy-is-and-why-its-relevant-to-all-of-us-at-each-stage-of-our-lives-christian\/","title":{"rendered":"What heutagogy is and why it&#8217;s relevant to all of us at each stage of our lives [Christian]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Harold Jarche&#8217;s recent posting, &#8220;<\/span><strong><a href=\"www.jarche.com\/2013\/07\/learning-is-too-important-to-be-left-to-the-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Learning is too important to be left to the professionals<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>,<\/strong>&#8221; made me reflect on the word <strong>heutagogy.\u00a0 <\/strong>First, a couple of definitions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heutagogy\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>heutagogy (wikipedia)<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>(additional emphasis DSC):<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In education, heutagogy, a term coined by Stewart Hase of Southern Cross University and Chris Kenyon in Australia, is the study of <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>self-determined<\/strong> <strong>learning<\/strong><\/span>. The notion is an expansion and reinterpretation of andragogy, and it is possible to mistake it for the same. However, there are several differences between the two that mark one from the other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Heutagogy places specific emphasis on <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><i>learning how to learn<\/i>, <i>double loop learning<\/i>, <i>universal learning opportunities<\/i>, <i>a non-linear process<\/i>, and <i>true learner self-direction<\/i><\/span><\/strong>. So, for example, whereas andragogy focuses on the best ways for people to learn, heutagogy <i>also<\/i> requires that educational initiatives include the improvement of people&#8217;s actual learning skills themselves, learning <i>how to<\/i> learn as well as just learning a given subject itself. Similarly, whereas andragogy focuses on structured education, in heutagogy <i>all<\/i> learning contexts, both formal and informal, are considered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/heutagogycop.wordpress.com\/history-of-heutagogy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>What is heutagogy? (heutagogycop.wordpress.com)<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em> (emphasis DSC):<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>\u201cHeutagogy is the study of self-determined learning \u2026<\/strong><\/span> It is also an attempt to challenge some ideas about teaching and learning that still prevail in teacher centred learning and the need for, as Bill Ford (1997) eloquently puts it \u2018knowledge sharing\u2019 rather than \u2018knowledge hoarding\u2019.
