{"id":397,"date":"2010-01-26T10:24:42","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T15:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=397"},"modified":"2010-01-26T10:37:19","modified_gmt":"2010-01-26T15:37:19","slug":"how-to-navigate-social-media-and-avoid-information-overload","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/01\/26\/how-to-navigate-social-media-and-avoid-information-overload\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Navigate Social Media (and Avoid Information Overload) &#8212; Tom Kuhlmann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Navigating social media\" href=\"http:\/\/www.articulate.com\/rapid-elearning\/how-to-navigate-social-media-and-avoid-information-overload\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>How to Navigate Social Media (and Avoid Information Overload)<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; Tom Kuhlmann<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>(Below is an excerpt from Tom&#8217;s posting.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Here are five simple ways to manage all of the information available to you.\u00a0 I also did a quick screencast that <a href=\"http:\/\/screenr.com\/gQ1\" target=\"_blank\">walks you through some of these tips<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li><strong>Use a feed reader to subscribe to the resources<\/strong>.\u00a0 Many of the social media tools and sites have an RSS feed.\u00a0 By subscribing via RSS feed, you can access everything from one site rather than having to visit each site that interests you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Filter by keywords<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some of the people I follow in Twitter post more than ten times a day.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to keep up with all of that.\u00a0 Besides, there are usually only a few things that interest me.\u00a0 So I tune them out.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even look at their posts.\u00a0 Instead, I create keyword filters.\u00a0 This helps me get rid of the noise and only see those things that interest me.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find information that\u2019s already aggregated<\/strong>.\u00a0 Don\u2019t feel like doing any of that sorting or subscribing?\u00a0 No biggie.\u00a0 Just find someone else who does it and go to that site.\u00a0 For example, if you\u2019re active in Facebook and use Articulate products, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Articulate\" target=\"_blank\">become a fan of Articulate<\/a>.\u00a0 A lot of the community news and resources are available there and that saves you from having to do it yourself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on what\u2019s practical<\/strong>.\u00a0 Even if you do all of the sorting and filtering, it\u2019s still a lot to handle.\u00a0 Personally, I\u2019m more interested in practical applications of ideas and not all of the conversation.\u00a0 So I tend to pay more attention to tutorials, examples, and demos than I do news stories and conversations.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Tune out<\/strong>.\u00a0 OK, this kind of goes contrary to the whole social media thing, but who cares.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about being on top of all of the chatter.
