We are quickly becoming a nation of permanent freelancers and temps.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0In 2006,\u00a0the last time<\/a>\u00a0the federal government counted, the number of independent and contingent workers\u2014contractors, temps, and the self-employed\u2014stood at 42.6 million, or about 30% of the workforce. How many are there today? We have no idea since 2006 was the last year that the government bothered to count this huge and growing sector of the American workforce.<\/p>\n

\nHow can we better teach our students to thrive as freelancers? <\/span><\/em><\/strong>Will their background of being successful at standardized tests help them in this si<\/span><\/em>tuation?\u00a0 Will being able to\u00a0plug-n-chug on equations cut it?\u00a0 We better start getting much more creative and allowing our students to be more creative — to pursue their own passions, gifts, abilities. Then, they will have a better chance of finding meaning and purpose in their work.
