A very powerful piece."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em>From DSC:<\/em><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/60919251\" target=\"_blank\">THIS is what it could look like if students OWNED their own learning and could pursue their own passions!<\/a> &#8212; A powerful piece! <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Well worth your time if you are <\/span><span style=\"color: #800000;\">involved with &#8212; or concerned about &#8212; education in any way, shape, or form.<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The video starts off with this troubling\/deep assertion by a student (which I&#8217;m sure varies in actuality across the board):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s crazy that&#8230;in a system that is meant to teach&#8230;and to help the youth, there is NO voice from the youth at all.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/60919251\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38239\" alt=\"IfStudentsDesignedTheirOwnSchools-March2013\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IfStudentsDesignedTheirOwnSchools-March2013.jpg\" width=\"406\" height=\"615\" border=\"0\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IfStudentsDesignedTheirOwnSchools-March2013.jpg 406w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IfStudentsDesignedTheirOwnSchools-March2013-99x150.jpg 99w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 406px) 100vw, 406px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A few radical &#8212; but powerful ideas &#8212; to help students OWN their own learning (something that they will need for the rest of their lives):<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>More choice, more control<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Research what you <em>want<\/em> to research<\/strong> <strong>&#8212; &#8220;The most important thing about your question is that you ACTUALLY\u00a0 WANT to know the answer.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Students pursue their own passions\u00a0<\/strong>&#8212; be that an interest in music, art, science, aviation, or in another discipline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Student present their findings to each other &#8212; which involves more of a team-based approach (i.e. peer pressure in a <em>positive<\/em> way here, strongly encouraging each other to do their best work so as not to let others down)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Peer evaluation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">No quizzes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">No grades<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Often no adults in the room; if adults are there, they are acting more as guides and facilitators<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Multiple types of &#8220;assignments&#8221;\/activities &#8212; some individualistic, some group work, some long-term<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">A couple of questions kept running through the back of my mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Did they hand select these particular students for this program? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">If so, what were the predominant characteristics of those students? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">With that said, this is a very powerful piece &#8212; well worth your time to check out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From DSC: THIS is what it could look like if students OWNED their own learning and could pursue their own passions! &#8212; A powerful piece!
