Location. Location.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">In higher education, I have it that we&#8217;ll be hearing this for a while:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> Experimentation. Experimentation. Experimentation.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Consider the following reflections on Steve&#8217; Kolowich&#8217;s solid article,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2013\/01\/25\/arizona-st-and-knewtons-grand-experiment-adaptive-learning\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The new intelligence<\/strong><\/a> (from InsideHigherEd.com)<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And for the largest public university in the country, it is hardly fiction. Arizona State University has become ground zero for data-driven teaching in higher education. The university has rolled out an ambitious effort to turn its classrooms into laboratories for technology-abetted \u201cadaptive learning\u201d &#8212; a method that purports to give instructors real-time intelligence on how well each of their students is getting each concept.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/sites\/default\/server_files\/styles\/large\/public\/media\/IHE_ASUEdSoftwareV2.jpg?width=903&amp;height=558\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/sites\/default\/server_files\/styles\/large\/public\/media\/IHE_ASUEdSoftwareV2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">Besides being used in blended learning environments&#8230;some predictions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">These technologies will become integrated into what MOOCs eventually morph into and provide a significant piece of the assessment\/guidance puzzle<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Such tools will be a part of one&#8217;s future learning ecosystem<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Such tools will be part of interactive, massively open online educationally-related <em>games<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Such tools will be integrated into personalized learning agents &#8212; spiders\/recommendation engines that scan the web for relevant items that one needs to complete one&#8217;s cognitive gaps in a subject\/topic<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">They will be accessible from your living room as well as from your mobile devices<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">They will integrate into web-based learner profiles<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">It&#8217;s the sort of thing I was trying to get at with this graphic from 3 years ago:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-199\" alt=\"Like a mechanic...\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/like-a-mechanic.jpg\" width=\"98%\" height=\"98%\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/like-a-mechanic.jpg 700w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/like-a-mechanic-150x85.jpg 150w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/like-a-mechanic-600x342.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Please don&#8217;t misunderstand me, the human mind is far beyond the complexity of an engine. But I still think that there will be more<strong> tools &amp; technologies developed that will help the teachers\/professors in their efforts to guide students into the knowledge of a discipline.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>I beseech the corporate world to get involved more here &#8212; and not with the end goal of earning profits &#8212; but rather, with the aim of making the world a better place and giving a huge gift to the generations yet born.\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>I urge the corporate world to reach into their deep pockets (1.X trillion in cash at this point in time) and team up with our youth\/teachers\/professors\/instructional designers\/programmers\/etc. to develop sophisticated, educationally-related, engaging games that are relevant to the world that our youth will be growing up in; and\/or create interactive simulations that provide more choice\/more control to the learners.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>I urge more of the corporate world to join Knewton and Pearson and allocate some significant resources to help develop the next gen learning tools.<\/strong> \u00a0<strong>I&#8217;ll bet that we&#8217;ll be amazed at what can be produced!
