{"id":33322,"date":"2012-10-18T16:47:27","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T20:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=33322"},"modified":"2012-10-19T12:34:07","modified_gmt":"2012-10-19T16:34:07","slug":"the-discussion-board-audit-a-great-ideapresentation-from-hayley-lake-patrick-lordan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2012\/10\/18\/the-discussion-board-audit-a-great-ideapresentation-from-hayley-lake-patrick-lordan\/","title":{"rendered":"The discussion board audit &#8212; A great idea\/presentation from Hayley Lake, Patrick Lordan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My notes from Thursday, 10\/11\/12 Sloan-C presentation by Hayley Lake &amp; Patrick Lordan from Eastern Washington University, US<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sloanconsortium.org\/conference\/2012\/aln\/discussion-board-audit-how-will-i-know-what-i-think-until-i-see-what-i-say\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The discussion board audit: How will I know what I think until I see what I say<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Discussion boards \/ forums are great for:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading and using research to support viewpoints\/perspectives<\/li>\n<li>Writing<\/li>\n<li>Deeper reflections<\/li>\n<li>Communications\n<ul>\n<li>Need to get point across succinctly<\/li>\n<li>Decide what\u2019s important<\/li>\n<li>Tailor language to audience<\/li>\n<li>Be professional<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Critical thinking<\/li>\n<li>Student-to-student interactions \u2013 students can generate their own online community<\/li>\n<li>Time management and study skills<\/li>\n<li>Can be relevant to real world and draw upon students\u2019 experiences<\/li>\n<li>Bringing out the wall-flowers \u2013 they can come alive and really contribute in this manner<\/li>\n<li>Thinking more meta-cognitively and growing in self-awareness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>(Bearing in mind a class size of 24-30 students per class)<\/em><br \/>\nExcept for first two weeks, did not answer each posting; instead, typically the professor looked for themes and provided a weekly recap. Straightened out any wrong understandings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics of reflective learners<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Curious<\/li>\n<li>Open to criticism and different approaches<\/li>\n<li>Honest<\/li>\n<li>Motivated to improve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Used the idea of a Discussion board audit<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For closure<\/li>\n<li>For summative assessment<\/li>\n<li>For deeper learning\/reflection; richness, depth, self-evaluation<\/li>\n<li>Based off <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/profhacker\/making-student-blogs-pay-off-with-blog-audits\/27559\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Samples\u2019 (George Mason University) blog audit<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Re-read all DB postings, mark them up, analyze own work; look for themes and ideas worth revisiting, assess own learning<\/li>\n<li>Really helped students see how they had learned, changed, grown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Another discussion board related presentation was:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sloanconsortium.org\/conference\/2012\/aln\/cleaning-out-crickets-enhancing-faculty-presence-online-instruction\" target=\"_blank\">Cleaning Out the Crickets: Enhancing Faculty Presence in Online Instruction<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>John J.
