{"id":3296,"date":"2010-04-01T08:40:35","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T12:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=3296"},"modified":"2010-04-01T08:40:35","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T12:40:35","slug":"writing-in-and-about-the-future-from-the-futurist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/04\/01\/writing-in-and-about-the-future-from-the-futurist\/","title":{"rendered":"Writing in (and about) the future &#8212; from the Futurist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>===================================<br \/>\nWRITING IN (AND ABOUT) THE FUTURE<br \/>\n===================================<\/p>\n<p>The journal-turned-magazine CREATIVE NONFICTION celebrated its<br \/>\ntransformation by organizing a one-day symposium, held at the Writer&#8217;s<br \/>\nCenter in Bethesda, Maryland, focused on how writing, reading, and<br \/>\npublishing may be transformed in the decade ahead.<\/p>\n<p>On the program were two futurists: Jay Ogilvy, co-founder of the Global<br \/>\nBusiness Network, who described the usefulness of scenario thinking for<br \/>\nweighing both optimistic and pessimistic visions of the future, and Dan<br \/>\nSarewitz, director of the Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes<br \/>\nat Arizona State University, who warned of the unexpected consequences<br \/>\nof human enhancement that many enthusiasts are hailing as a golden age<br \/>\nof prosperity, pointing out that the greatest example of that<br \/>\nenhancement is the soldier.<\/p>\n<p>The bulk of the conference focused on how writers fit into this future,<br \/>\na time when people may be reading fewer books but communicating with<br \/>\none another and, yes, reading via a wider variety of platforms&#8211;e.g.,<br \/>\nblogs, Twitter, Facebook, and the multimedia digital Vook (video book)<br \/>\ndescribed by Jack Sallay, the company&#8217;s vice president of marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Writers of the future will bear more of the responsibility of reaching<br \/>\ntheir audiences, as publishers&#8217; economic models become less supportive<br \/>\nof traditional functions like marketing and promotion, many of the<br \/>\nsymposium participants argued.
