Another reason why I don&#8217;t trust Facebook."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20120202\/facebooks-ad-business-is-a-3-billion-mystery\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Facebook\u2019s ad business is a $3 billion mystery<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from Peter Kafka<\/p>\n<p><em>Excerpt (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">emphasis DSC<\/span>):<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So <a href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20120201\/on-its-eighth-birthday-facebook-files-to-raise-5-billion-in-massive-ipo\/\" target=\"_blank\">the numbers are out<\/a>, and we know that Facebook\u2019s ad business really is huge.\u00a0 And it really is growing like a weed.\u00a0 Just like we thought.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But how exactly does Facebook\u2019s ad business <em>work<\/em>?\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>We still don\u2019t know a lot about that part.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1326801\/000119312512034517\/d287954ds1.htm\">S-1<\/a> mentions \u201cadvertising\u201d 123 times, and \u201cadvertisers\u201d another 117 times.\u00a0 But when it comes to describing how the company actually sells advertising,<strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> it is vague.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And that\u2019s why a good chunk of the S-1 talks about the overall market for advertising \u2014 not just Web advertising, but all advertising. The message: <em>There is a lot of money being spent on ads, and as we get even bigger, and smarter, we\u2019ll figure out how to capture more of it<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And at some point they may share some of that knowledge with the rest of us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\">If this figure were $3,000, no big deal, right?
