Although the President emphasized that students are responsible for their own educational progress, he extended this responsibility to all Americans. \u201cIt\u2019s up to their parents. It\u2019s up to their teachers,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s up to all of us.\u201d This challenge came amidst a troubling crisis in our nation\u2019s schools: every year, nearly one-third of all public high school students\u2014and almost one-half of minorities\u2014fail to graduate with their class. These high dropout rates have negative consequences for dropouts themselves, our economy, and the civic fabric of communities.
