Driven by the outcry over book prices, federal legislation,  readily available pricing information on the Internet, and sophisticated  web-based rental management platforms, old and new competitors are  disrupting the $10 billion college textbook business. Book rental isn\u2019t  really a new phenomenon\u2014a few college stores have been renting books  since the Civil War. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacs.org\/\"><strong>National Association of College Stores (NACS)<\/strong><\/a> proclaimed fall 2010 as the \u201cYear of the Rental.\u201d Players include long-timers like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fheg.follett.com\/virtual\/intro.cfm\"><strong>Follett<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.budgetext.com\/index.htm\"><strong>Budgetext<\/strong><\/a>, institutional stores  and fast-growing start-ups. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookrenter.com\/\"><strong>BookRenter<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>started in 2008, netted $40 million from investors in a funding round this past February. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chegg.com\/\"><strong>Chegg<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> started in 2007, has <a href=\"http:\/\/kara.allthingsd.com\/20100926\/exclusive-chegg-raises-75-million-in-additional-funding-from-asias-ace\/\">raised $200+ million in venture capital<\/a> and attracted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/chegg-expands-management-team-with-two-key-additions-112928984.html\">senior management<\/a> from <strong>Yahoo<\/strong> and <strong>Netflix.<\/strong> The same drivers are growing trade in used books, eBooks, and online  instructional content. Rental is also driving new business models for  sourcing and distributing educational materials that may carry the  industry forward into digital. Having book inventory isn\u2019t necessarily  required\u2014at least one high-flying firm, <strong>BookRenter,<\/strong> exists mainly as an online marketplace.
