Christian<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ve been thinking recently about new approaches to relaying &#8212; and engaging with &#8212; content in a &#8220;textbook&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">For a physical textbook<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>When opening up a physical textbook to a particular page, QR-like codes would be printed on the physical pages of the textbook.\u00a0 With the advent of augmented reality, such a mechanism would open up some new possibilities to interact with content for that page. For example, some overall characteristics about this new, layered approach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Augmented reality could reveal multiple layers of information: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>From the author\/subject matter expert <\/strong>as well as the publisher&#8217;s instructional design team\n<ul>\n<li>Main points highlighted<\/li>\n<li>Pointers that may help with metacognition, such as potential mnemonics that might be helpful in moving something into long-term memory<\/li>\n<li>Studying strategies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>A layer that the professor or teacher could edit<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Main points highlighted<\/li>\n<li>Pointers that may help with metacognition, such as potential  mnemonics that might be helpful in moving something into long-term  memory<\/li>\n<li>Studying strategies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A layer for the students to comment on\/annotate that page<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A layer for other students&#8217; comments<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19130\" title=\"DanielSChristian-TextbookConcept-May2011\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-TextbookConcept-May20111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"845\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-TextbookConcept-May20111.jpg 845w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-TextbookConcept-May20111-150x110.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>For an electronic-based textbook<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The interface would allow for such layers to be visible or not<\/strong> &#8212; much like <a href=\"http:\/\/bodybrowser.googlelabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s Body Browser application<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For example, in this graphic, comments from the SME and\/or ID are highlighted on top of the normal text:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19114\" title=\"DanielSChristian-NewTextbook-SME-ID\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-NewTextbook-SME-ID.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-NewTextbook-SME-ID.jpg 385w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-NewTextbook-SME-ID-115x150.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19121\" title=\"DanielSChristian-TextbookConcept-May2011-Layers\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DanielSChristian-TextbookConcept-May2011-Layers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"845\" height=\"507\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Advantages of this concept\/model:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ties physical into virtual world<\/li>\n<li>We could economically update information (i.e. opens up streams of content)<\/li>\n<li>Integrates social learning<\/li>\n<li>Allows SMEs, IDs, faculty members to further comment\/add to content as new information becomes available<\/li>\n<li>Instructors could highlight the key points they want to stress<\/li>\n<li>Many of the layers could offer items that might help with students&#8217; meta-cognitive processes (i.e. to help them learn the content and move the content into long-term memory)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>One could envision the textbook being converted into something <em>more akin to an app in an online-based store <\/em>&#8212; with notifications of updates that could be constantly pushed out<\/strong><\/span><strong> <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Addendum (5\/26):<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.k12mobilelearning.com\/2011\/05\/mobile-augmented-reality-creating-21st-century-classroom-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mobile Augmented Reality: Creating 21st Century Classroom Resources<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; from k12mobilelearning.com by Johnny Kisso<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Concept] The new &#8220;textbook&#8221;: A multi-layered approach &#8212; from Daniel S.
