{"id":1618,"date":"2010-02-19T13:17:31","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T18:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=1618"},"modified":"2010-02-19T13:45:21","modified_gmt":"2010-02-19T18:45:21","slug":"quizzes-in-an-age-of-course-management-software-from-profhacker-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/02\/19\/quizzes-in-an-age-of-course-management-software-from-profhacker-com\/","title":{"rendered":"Quizzes in an age of course management software &#8212; from profhacker.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"quizzes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.profhacker.com\/2010\/02\/19\/quizzes-in-an-age-of-course-management-software\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Quizzes in an age of course management software<\/strong> <\/a>&#8212; from profhacker.com<\/p>\n<p>Most days, students in my literature classes will have accessed Moodle, and will have taken a multiple-choice quiz on the day\u2019s reading.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The secret sauce to the quizzes is, frankly, the course management system.\u00a0 Here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The online delivery means that the quizzes take zero minutes of class time<\/strong><em> (emphasis DSC).<\/em><em> <\/em> I usually teach the MWF (50-minute) schedule, and I can\u2019t be wasting time on quizzes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The online delivery also means that students can look at the questions before they read<\/strong><em> (emphasis DSC)<\/em>, which, if I\u2019ve thought about the questions enough, can help frame the reading a bit.<\/li>\n<li>Because the quizzes are multiple choice, <strong>Moodle grades \u2018em<\/strong> <em>(emphasis DSC).<\/em> I\u2019ll repeat that: THE CMS GRADES THE QUIZZES!\u00a0 This is awesome for lots of reasons: 1) the student knows, right away, how they\u2019re doing. 2) I know before class starts whether the class has understood the assigned reading. And, 3) I don\u2019t have to grade them.\u00a0 I\u2019m never behind on them.<\/li>\n<li>It turns out that the quizzes, easy as they are, reductive as they are, do usefully predict student performance.
