{"id":15742,"date":"2011-02-28T10:38:14","date_gmt":"2011-02-28T15:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=15742"},"modified":"2011-02-28T10:58:04","modified_gmt":"2011-02-28T15:58:04","slug":"mobile-content-is-twice-as-difficult-usability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2011\/02\/28\/mobile-content-is-twice-as-difficult-usability\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile content is twice as difficult [usability]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.useit.com\/alertbox\/mobile-content-comprehension.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mobile content is twice as difficult<\/strong><\/a> [usability] &#8212; from Jakob Nielsen<strong><br \/>\nSummary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When reading from an iPhone-sized screen, comprehension scores for complex Web content were 48% of desktop monitor scores.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s more <a title=\"Alertbox: Mobile Web 2009 = Desktop Web 1998\" href=\"http:\/\/www.useit.com\/alertbox\/mobile-2009.html\">painful to use the Web on mobile<\/a> phones than on desktop computers for many reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slower downloads<\/li>\n<li>No physical keyboard for data entry<\/li>\n<li>No mouse for selection; no mouse buttons to issue commands and  access contextual menus (indeed fewer signaling states, as discussed  further in our seminar on <a title=\"Nielsen Norman Group full-day training course: From Science to Design - Applying HCI Principles to Real World Problems\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/events\/tutorials\/hci_principles.html\">Applying HCI Principles to Real World Problems<\/a>: a touchscreen only signals &#8220;finger-down\/up,&#8221; whereas a mouse has hover state in addition to button press\/release)<\/li>\n<li>Small screen (often with tiny text)<\/li>\n<li>Websites designed for desktop access instead of following the <a title=\"Nielsen Norman Group report: Usability of Mobile Websites - 85 Design Guidelines for Improving Access to Web-Based Content and Services Through Mobile Devices\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nngroup.com\/reports\/mobile\/\">usability guidelines for mobile<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Alertbox: iPad Usability - First Findings From User Testing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.useit.com\/alertbox\/ipad.html\">App UIs<\/a> that lack consistency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction (IJMHCI): *for-pay* access to research paper\" href=\"http:\/\/www.igi-global.com\/bookstore\/article.aspx?TitleId=51657\" target=\"_blank\">New research<\/a> by R.I. Singh and colleagues from the University of Alberta provides one more reason: it&#8217;s <strong>much harder to understand complicated information<\/strong> when you&#8217;re reading through a peephole.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.useit.com\/alertbox\/mobile-content-comprehension.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8230;rest of posting here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>From DSC:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>With the above said, the mobile learning wave cannot &#8212; and most likely <em>should not<\/em> &#8212; be stopped.
