{"id":14472,"date":"2011-01-29T13:41:31","date_gmt":"2011-01-29T18:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=14472"},"modified":"2011-01-29T13:45:59","modified_gmt":"2011-01-29T18:45:59","slug":"crowdsourcing-chemistry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2011\/01\/29\/crowdsourcing-chemistry\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowdsourcing Chemistry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iijiij.com\/2011\/01\/28\/the-most-inspiring-introduction-to-open-science-ever-07275\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14473\" title=\"MatTodd-April-2010\" src=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/MatTodd-April-2010.jpg\" alt=\"Crowdsourcing chemistry -- April 2010 presentation at Google Tech Talk -- by Dr Matthew Todd, School of Chemistry, University of Sydney\" width=\"579\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/MatTodd-April-2010.jpg 579w, http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/MatTodd-April-2010-150x115.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Google Tech Talk<br \/>\nApril 6, 2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ABSTRACT<\/strong><br \/>\nPresented by Dr Matthew Todd, School of Chemistry, University of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Science shaped itself in the founding days of learned societies: individuals or teams competed, in secret, with paper-based communication in subscription journals. <strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Why are we all still doing science like this?<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #800000;\">The internet has had a major impact in our sharing of data by traditional means, but it has not yet radically changed the way we actually perform science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a list of the projects mentioned in the video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Praziquantel\">Praziquantel<\/a> is being used in the treatment of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schistosomiasis\">schistosomiasis<\/a>, a parasitic infection spread by freshwater snails in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The Gates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/Pages\/home.aspx\">Foundation<\/a> is funding an operational research program \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/score.uga.edu\/\">SCORE<\/a> to control and eliminate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/neglected_diseases\/en\/\">Neglected Tropical Diseases.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This operates out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.imperial.ac.uk\/\">Imperial College<\/a>, London and is led by Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.imperial.ac.uk\/medicine\/people\/a.fenwick\/\">Alan Fenwick<\/a> OBE.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Cathedral_and_the_Bazaar\">Cathedral<\/a> model is where a professor and students conduct funded research to  develop a solution whereas the Bazaar model invites other people to  collaborate in an Open source way to develop a solution.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla-europe.org\/en\/firefox\/\">Firefox<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\">Chrome<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikipedia<\/a> are all Bazaar models.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscience.org\/blog\/\">Open Science<\/a> involves publishing in real time and letting people respond as they see fit and then collaborate in real time.<\/p>\n<p>The UsefulChem <a href=\"http:\/\/usefulchem.wikispaces.com\/\">Project<\/a> led by the <a href=\"http:\/\/drexel.academia.edu\/JeanClaudeBradley\">Jean Claude Bradley<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drexel.edu\/\">Drexel University<\/a> \u2013 aimed at producing molecules that will be used to treat malaria.\u00a0 Bradley is a proponent of and practises <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_Notebook_Science\">Open Notebook Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Open Source Drug Discovery:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osdd.net\/\">http:\/\/www.osdd.net\/<\/a> \u2013 OSDD is a\u00a0<em>CSIR Team India Consortium with Global Partnership<\/em> with a vision to provide affordable healthcare to the developing world.<\/p>\n<p>Open WetWare:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/openwetware.org\/wiki\/OpenWetWare:About\">http:\/\/openwetware.org\/wiki\/OpenWetWare:About<\/a> \u2013 <a title=\"OpenWetWare\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenWetWare\">OpenWetWare<\/a> is an effort to promote the sharing of information, know-how, and  wisdom among researchers and groups who are working in biology &amp;  biological engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The Open Dinosaur Project:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/opendino.wordpress.com\/\">http:\/\/opendino.wordpress.com\/<\/a> (founded to involve scientists and the public alike in developing a comprehensive database of dinosaur limb bone).<\/p>\n<p>Chemspider:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chemspider.com\/\">http:\/\/www.chemspider.com\/<\/a> \u2013 <a title=\"ChemSpider\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chemspider.com\/\">ChemSpider<\/a> links together compound information across the web, providing free text  and structure search access of millions of chemical structures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fold.it\/portal\/\">Foldit<\/a> is a revolutionary new computer game enabling you to contribute to important scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>NCBI (<a title=\"National Center for Biotechnology Information\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.994994,-77.099339&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=38.994994,-77.099339%20%28National%20Center%20for%20Biotechnology%20Information%29&amp;t=h\">National Center for Biotechnology Information<\/a>): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/\">http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/<\/a> \u2013 advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"GenBank\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GenBank\">GenBank<\/a>:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/genbank\/\">http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/genbank\/<\/a> \u2013 is the NIH genetic sequence database, an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences.<\/p>\n<p>The Tropical Disease <a href=\"http:\/\/tropicaldisease.org\/\">Initiative<\/a> aims to apply an open-source collaborative approach to biological and medical research for tropical diseases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesynapticleap.org\/\">The Synaptic Leap<\/a>:\u00a0 \u2013 Open Source Biomedical Research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/\">Stack Overflow<\/a> allows you to post code and ask for help on a problem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lab.chempedia.com\/\">Chempedia<\/a> is a free service for uniquely identifying and naming chemical substances.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ch.ic.ac.uk\/rzepa\/cml\/\">CML<\/a> (<a title=\"Chemical Markup Language\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chemical_Markup_Language\">Chemical Markup Language<\/a>) is an open standard for representing molecular and other chemical data.\u00a0 It includes <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XML_schema\">XML Schema<\/a>, source code for working with CML data, and was devised by\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Murray-Rust\">Peter Murray-Rust<\/a> who worked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/us\/default.aspx\">Microsoft<\/a> to develop a <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/downloads\/3fe31020-0e51-4ee0-ada3-5cd142bcf930\/default.aspx\">Chem Word Add-in<\/a> enabling a Word document to be searched and the chemical information in  it to be automatically annotated and extracted.\u00a0 When you hover over a  word, you get a structure and you can change the structure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chemicalize.org\/about.php\">Chemicalize.org<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0 \u00a0a public web resource developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chemaxon.com\/\">ChemAxon<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>.
