We need quality at scale and there is finally a way achieve it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">More than two million students learn online.\u00a0 The scaled providers  (Apex, K12, Connections, Florida Virtual, NC Virtual, and Lincoln  Interactive to name a few) could triple in size given 60 days notice and  do it with consistent quality.\u00a0 We\u2019ve never had an opportunity like  that; it\u2019s only local and state policy that stands in the way\u00a0 of better  learning opportunities for several million kids and fast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Community\u2013based organizations (CBO) build powerful sustained  relationships with youth, engage them in developmental activities, and  connect them to youth and family services.\u00a0 Many of them are frustrated  by working around struggling schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>If we combine the two assets\u2014online instruction and powerful  community connections\u2014we get one big scalable idea: blended CBOs.\u00a0 A  blended school model incorporates online learning and onsite support in  ways that are often more flexible and cost effective than traditional  schools.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Michael Robbins, Department of Education\u2019s Office of Faith-Based  Partnerships, is interested in expanding the educational impact of CBOs.  \u00a0He thinks blended CBOs is a big idea.\u00a0 Over breakfast at DC\u2019s Tabard  Inn, Michael and I sketched out a couple ways this idea could scale:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Big Idea: Blended CBO &#8212; from EdReformer.com by Tom Vander Ark The nation received a friendly \u2018C\u2019 in the annual state of the nation last week.
