{"id":11369,"date":"2010-11-09T20:03:01","date_gmt":"2010-11-10T01:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/?p=11369"},"modified":"2010-11-09T20:05:25","modified_gmt":"2010-11-10T01:05:25","slug":"some-reflections-on-visions-2020-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/danielschristian.com\/learning-ecosystems\/2010\/11\/09\/some-reflections-on-visions-2020-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Some reflections on Visions 2020.2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>From DSC:<\/strong><br \/>\nBelow are some notes and reflections after reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/os\/technology\/plan\/2004\/site\/documents\/visions_20202.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Visions 2020.2:\u00a0 Student Views on Transforming Education and Training Through Advanced Technologies<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; by the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Education, and NetDay<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Basic Themes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Digital Devices<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Access to Computers and the Internet<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Intelligent Tutor\/Helper<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ways to Learn and Complete School Work Using Technology<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Several recurring words jumped off the page at me, including:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Voice activation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A rugged, mobile, lightweight, all-convergent communications and entertainment device<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Online classes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Interactive textbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Educational games<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3D virtual history enactments &#8212; take me there \/ time machine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Intelligent tutors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wireless<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">24x7x365 access<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Easy to use<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Digital platforms for collaborating and working with others on schoolwork\/homework<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Personalized, optimized learning for each student<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Immersive environments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Augmented reality<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Interactive<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Multimedia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Virtual<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Simulations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Digital diagnostics (i.e. analytics)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wireless videoconferencing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Here are some quotes:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Math and reading were often cited specifically as subjects that might benefit from the use of learning technologies. (p. 5)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>No concept drew greater interest from the student responders than some sort of an intelligent tutor\/helper.<\/strong><\/span> Math was the most often mentioned subject for which tutoring help was needed. <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Many students desired such a tutor or helper for use in school and at home. (p. 17)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;tools,  tutors, and other specialists to make it possible to continuously adjust  the pace, nature and style of the learning process. (p.27)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So many automated processes have been built in for them: inquiry style, learning style, personalized activity selection, multimedia preferences, physical requirements, and favorite hardware devices. If the student is in research mode, natural dialogue inquiry and social filtering tools configure a working environment for asking questions and validating hypotheses. If students like rich multimedia and are working in astronomy, they automatically are connected to the Sky Server which accesses all the telescopic pictures of the stars, introduces an on-line expert talking about the individual constellations, and pulls up a chatting environment with other students who are looking at the same environment. (p.28)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8212; Randy Hinrichs | Research Manager for Learning Science and Technology | Microsoft Research Group<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">From DSC:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">As I was thinking about the section on the <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">intelligent tutor\/helper<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">&#8230;I thought,<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"> &#8220;You know&#8230;this isn&#8217;t just for educators. Pastors and youth group leaders out there should take note of what students were asking for here.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Help, I need somebody<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Help me with ____<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Many students expressed interest in an \u201canswer machine,\u201d through which a student could pose a specific question and the machine would respond with an answer. <strong>&lt;&#8211;
